SHE'S ABOUT THAT BOOK LIFE: RISING STRONG|BRENÉ BROWN

18.4.16

Hi guys,
Hope you're all well and have had a fabulous weekend!

So you may or may not be aware but I'm a massive, massive reader. I'm book obsessed and have been since I was 5 and a half years old when I started my lifelong obsession with Harry Potter. I was always that annoying girl in primary school who would be allowed to read above the level set for our age and would always finish books super fast haha. I've always been into fiction however, lately I've found myself reaching for 'Self-Help', 'Advice/Memoir' type books, alongside all the fiction I usually read.

Currently, I'm about 3/4 of my way through reading 'Rising Strong' by Brené Brown. For those who don't Know, Brown is a research professor who studies vulnerability, courage, shame and worthiness. She's the woman behind 3 best selling books including 'Rising Strong' and one of the top five most watched Ted Talks ever, 'The Power of Vulnerability' which if you haven't seen I highly, highly recommend watching.

Rising Strong is all about overcoming your mistakes, downfalls, facing hurt and learning how to use those experiences to make you a stronger and more connected person. It's all about reconciling with the emotions that usually accompany failure or perceived failure such as shame, guilt, anger and unworthiness and being able to change the negative stories we tell ourselves to explain these experiences.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the book so far. Brené writes in a very relatable fashion using her own personal experiences and anecdotes throughout the book to make it easy to understand and relate to. A lot has happened to me personally in the last few years and this book, amongst others, has truly helped me to understand and come to terms with the concepts of failure, hurt, and giving yourself permission to feel whatever emotions you are going through and how to work through them. I'm a firm believer that every mistake, or negative experience is an opportunity for growth and learning. This book is built on this and shows you how you can gain positive self development and exponential growth from these negative experiences if you honestly apply the concepts Brené shares.

I would 100% recommend this book, especially to anyone who has gone through anything negative or experienced a setback in any shape of form. It's a deeply interesting, enlightening and at times hugely funny book which I believe everyone can gain something positive from.

Have any of you read Rising Strong, or any of Brené's other books? If so, what did you think?

Don't forget to check out her Ted talk on The Power of Vulnerability and you can buy Rising Strong here.

That's all for now folks!

Peace&love xxx

  35. This definitely looks like a book I would need right now! I've been leaning towards self-help books, like Eat Pray Love and I find them to be so eye opening! I love the idea of this book being about overcoming obstacles, learning about your self worth and growth. I could use that in my life right now, so this one is already on my list of books to buy once I finish those I have. How nice it is to find a fellow avid reader!
